Captain Scott left Cardiff on his final journey to the South Pole in June 1910. But the expedition was ill-fated: Scott and his companions died on the return journey in March 1912. The classic film Scott of the Antarctic (1947) charts their stoicism and bravery and its compelling atmosphere owes much to Vaughan Williams's music, conjuring up the eerie wide-open spaces of the Antarctic. Here the original film music is heard alongside Vaughan Williams's Symphony No 7 Antarctica, weaving music from the film into a powerful tapestry.
