2011 Cardiff Music Festival
I'm sure you've heard of the choir Only Men Aloud, right? Well, I went to the wedding of one of them.
The choir were at the reception and performed a cover of All By Myself, which was received very well. But that's not what I'm here to tell you about today! Because some members from this band have started up a brand new music festival, to promote young musicians and let them perform along with some big names in the musical world, all for charity, of course. What lovely lads they are!
The Artistic Director of the festival, David Mahoney, has said this about the whole event: 'My hope is that one day, this festival will be able to compete with some of the major European music festivals as a celebration of high quality music making by the enormous wealth of talent that this city has to offer’.
This event, The Cardiff Music Festival, will be a non-profit organisation working towards three goals: to give fantastic performances to the capital city of Wales, to promote young musicians and composers, and to raise money for charities through the performances. Money made this year will go to the Noah's Ark Appeal, The Elizabeth Evans Trust and Amser Justin Time. Another purpose for the festival is to bring classical music and musical theatre (my favourite kind of music and theatre, it must be said) to those who haven't had access to it before.
The festival will be opened by the Cardiff Sinfonietta, the resident ensemble, who will be joined by a young pianist called Sophie Cashell, who has already won BBC's Classical Star. On the musical theatre evening, there will be an all-star line-up featuring Katy Treharne, currently playing Christine in the west-end production of Phantom of the Opera, Jessica Robinson from Over the Rainbow on the BBC, and some members of Only Men Aloud. And as if all of that isn't enough excitement for you, there will also be the Manchester Chamber Orchestra and an Opera Gala!
The festival also heralds the beginning of the Young Welsh Artists Recital Series, promoting Steffan Morris, Anne Denholm, Steffan Jones and two young composers, with work premiering at the festival. You never know, next year it could be you being promoted! There will be singing workshops and informal performances at the Wales Millennium Centre.
The 2011 Cardiff Music Festival will have over 100 performers involved, creating a unique opportunity for the next generation of Welsh performers, being supported by the South Wales community. It will definitely be worth going to. The festival runs from Thursday 15th to Sunday 18th of September.
