Be The Carnival
During June or July 2009 (dates and venue to be confirmed) SWICA will be organising their first Carnival Arts Training Project.
The project will involve a week-long residency (Monday - Friday 10.00am - 5.00pm, with evenings as an optional extra depending on participant's circumstances and availability) and will be led by SWICA's long-term Artistic Director of MAS Carnivals Amaru Chatawa (pictured).
Amaru will be joined by SWICA's regular team of Caribbean carnival specialists - his four colleagues will assist in delivering a high quality and unique training opportunity :
All selected participants will over one week be involved in the following
- backpack construction
- head piece and mask making
- costume research and design
- carnival drumming (optional)
- carnival dance (optional)
All selected participants will have the opportunity to design and create one large-scale backpack King costume (morning sessions), the afternoon sessions will be given over to working collectively on two large-scale float-based carnival creations.
During the optional evening sessions (5.00pm - 9.00pm), selected participants will have the option of returning to the project to:
- continue working on their individual backpack,
- explore carnival dance and drum techniques,
- peruse SWICA's extensive world-wide carnival documentation (which includes some fantastic DVDs!)
-?the opportunity for a personal professional surgery/advice session with Steve Fletcher, founder and Development Officer of SWICA.
A total of 20 participants is envisaged (thereby ensuring a high tutor to trainee ratio of 1:4). Successful participants will be selected by a panel considering their suitability (N.B : there will be two streams of the project : Beginners and Intermediate).
Potential participants will need to complete an application form and those successfully selected will need to confirm by sending £50 non returnable booking form (this will be the only cost - all materials provided).
If you would like SWICA to send you further details, please email and SWICA will send more details to you as soon as they are available.
N.B : If you want to register an interest with SWICA then please call 029 2038 209 or email sf@swica.force9.co.uk before Monday 12th January- not least your interest will assist SWICA in obtaining funding support from the Arts Council Of Wales for this project.
