Big Weekend 2009
As the sun pounds Cardiff, thoughts turn to what do to with the summer weekends we have at our disposal.
One of the first questions to crop up in any Cardiffians mind is who are the headliners for this year’s Big Weekend?
Ponder no longer for I have a piping hot press release in my hand! Soundtracking three evenings of thrills, spills and bellyaches are Kids In Glass Houses on the strictly local shenanigans of Friday 31st July, Third World bring the vibes for the dreads and the Birkenstocks on Saturday 1st August and Liverpudlian indie botherers The Zutons will bring the Sunday to a triumphant close on August 2nd.
Also playing over the weekend are Brit-Pop pioneers and lyrical dons The Lightning Seeds, fey indie-poppers and Peel favourites Camera Obscura, Sunday Best signed and more hopping mad than a bag of frogs Ebony Bones, Jools Holland’s favourite Irish rockabilly singer Imelda May and Mold heroes The Joy Formidable.
Alongside the impressive music line up at The Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend, there is of course the massive travelling funfair, which springs up like a hilarity and nausea inducing fungi around the civic centre. It’s the biggest one in Blighty apparently. And there’s also the MAS Carnival on the Saturday, which will wind its way up from the bay to City Hall in a cornucopia of beats and sequins.
For the creatives amongst you in the run-up to the carnival there will be free carnival arts workshops to design and create costumes and learn about Caribbean dance and drumming at the Butetown Youth Pavilion for three weeks from July 14.
