Bike Week
Is there any pleasure as simple and rewarding as riding a bike on a beautiful summer’s day? I reckon it’s pretty hard to beat. And the powers that be seem to agree as they’ve made this week (Saturday June 13th to Sunday 21st) Bike Week.
Bike Week has been running (or indeed peddling) from 1923 and encourages everyone to swap four wheels for two. And what with the recent rise in awareness in health regarding ourselves and the planet as a whole, cycling is championed by greens and healthy types a like.
Cycling is also apparently the quickest way to get around a busy city although I reckon a helicopter or a jet pack would beat a bike.
Cardiff is getting in on Bike Week by running a series of events across the week. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, a bit shaky or one step away from entering the Tour De France, there’s an event for you. Highlights include?
Sunday June 14th - Cycle Cardiff - Ride into the Vale.
Monday 15th - Bike2UWIC & National Assembly for Wales, as part of Cycle to Work Day.
Tuesday 16th - Cardiff children Bike to School - St Pauls Primary (Grangetown), St Marys Primary (Canton), Trelai Primary, Cwrt yr Ala Junior and Glyn Derw High School (Caerau).
Wednesday 17th - Cycle Cardiff - Evening ride to Llandaff (4 miles via pub). Good for beginners.
Friday 19th - Cardiff Cycling Campaign - Easy Ride in Bute Park, for the less confident cyclist.
June 20 Pedal Power - Two fund raising bike rides - Brecon to Cardiff (transport to take cyclists & bikes up) and a round trip from Cardiff to Taffs Well and back again obviously. There's also a family bike ride in Bute Park.
