DEMO
Do you remember a few weeks back when I was meant to write about DEMO? I completely lost the plot and wrote about Devo instead? Well Arielle has decided to write about DEMO and does a far better job of explaining the festival with nary a mention of Devo or any other seminal New Wave band you care to name…
For one day only St David’s Hall are opening up their doors, rooms and stages to welcome in some of Cardiff’s best community arts groups from across the city.
They're calling it DEMO: Festival of Cardiff Community Arts and are inviting the public to come and join in.
It will be far from an ordinary day at the Hall. With artists and organisations making use of every space, floor and surface there will be a buzz of activity right from the front steps through to the backstage areas, foyers and stages.
In each room the public will find a mixture of displays, workshops and performances from over twenty of Cardiff’s leading community arts organisations. It’s a packed schedule with activities to suit all ages and interests.
The public are invited to take part in a variety of workshops including circus skills with the famous Nofit State Circus, singing, drumming and percussion with Community Music Wales, Gamelan with A2 Arts Active and African dance with BVSNW.
It's a family festival and the Cardiff Youth Service will be there running MCing, graffiti and drama workshops and experienced producers from Grassroots will be encouraging people to Make A Beat. Even the very young are catered for with the Wales Millennium Centre running pre-school music sessions.
There will be no shortage of performances and music either, with local bands and Samba Galez playing throughout the day. SWICA will be performing excerpts from their carnival theatre piece Dragon and other big names on the bill for performances include Academi and Welsh National Opera.
For those into their films ProMo-Cymru and theSprout will be setting up a juke-box cinema and chill out zone, where there will be a choice of some of Cardiff’s best community films available at the click of a button. They will also be available to talk to young people about getting into the creative media industries including on-line journalism.
If you’re into crafts, there will be lots of opportunity to get creative including taking part in a recycled jewellery workshop by the Makers Guild in Wales/Craft in the bay.
DEMO: Festival of Cardiff Community Arts is happening on Saturday 2nd October between 10am - 5pm at St David's Hall and is 100% free to everyone.
