Earth Hour - What Are You Going To Do?
Can you imagine what the world would look like if everyone around the globe turned off their lights for one hour at the same time? It would be dark, yes. But look at it this way, how much energy would be saved?
Last year over 90,000,000 people in the USA alone took part. Now that’s a lot of lightbulbs! With over 120 countries signed up already, Earth Hour is set to break records this year on Saturday 26th March 2011 at 8.30pm in the UK.
First organised by the World Wildlife Foundation Australia (WWF) in 2007, 2.2 million in Sydney, Oz, took part and as they say ? “the rest is history!” Since then, 3 more international Earth Hour days have been held to huge success. Even world renowned landmarks such as Big Ben, the Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower went dark to show their solidarity to the cause.
So, what are you gonna do hey? Well, Cardiff Council has signed up for the fourth time and they’re showing their support by turning off their lights at venues across Cardiff such as City Hall, Cardiff Castle, The New Theatre and the Roald Dahl Plass in the Bay.
But you at home can turn off anything; go an hour without the TV, a kettle, Xbox or the internet even (no Facebook!?). Think of it as an hour long lent. Maybe you could arrange a meeting with your mates, have a little sit-in, make a picnic, play board games, paint-by-numbers? all under torch light of course.
Are you already taking part? Tell us your story, take pics and write us an article.
