Seminar: Living as an Artist - Holly Davey and Debbie Savage
As part of the Wales Artist Resource Programme, artist Holly Davey and writer Debbie Savage will be talking about the economics and practicalities of living as an artist and ways to negotiate self employment later this month.
Using first and second hand accounts of the working lives of artists they will discuss the discrepancies between the myth and the realities of professional practice.
They will discuss obstacles that can be encountered and potential strategies identified in order to overcome them.
Following the talk there will be the opportunity for a discussion to ask further questions.
Debbie Savage is a freelance writer based in Cardiff. Alongside writing reviews and features for a variety of publications, she has worked closely with a number of artists, artist-led galleries, and public bodies to produce reports and co-ordinate local and international events.
In 2006 AN published Debbie's case study Making a Living as an Artistas part of their 'Research Papers' series.
Savage has an ongoing interest in how the arts are represented and debated outside of the creative sector, which formed the basis of her MA in Journalism Studies for Cardiff University in 2003.
Holly Davey is a lens-based artist working and exploring notions of identity in relation to environment or setting.
Since graduating Goldsmiths College, London in 1998 Holly has worked in photography and video including some live performance. Holly relocated to South Wales from New York at the end of 2004 to focus more on her practice as an artist.
Recent solo exhibitions include A Third is You, St Davids Hall, Cardiff, 2007 and Lost from View, Mission Gallery, Swansea, 2008.
The talk will take place on Friday 23 January 2008 from 10am-12pm at Mill Lane's g39 gallery in the Artist Resource Area. The talk is free and refreshments will be provided.
The talk is open to all but places are limited to ten and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Booking essential.
