New Central Library
WORDS: Abhijan Barua /
The temporary Cardiff Central Library on John Street will be closing its doors on Saturday 7 February for the final time as they prepare to move to their brand new six storey home on Mill Lane.
The new Cardiff Central Library will be opening on Saturday 14 March with new features that weren’t available in the temporary building. This includes plasma screens on each floor, listening posts in specially designed hubs, public access computers, and also quick access points on the ground floor for those in a rush.
The new library will also introduce multilingual self-service machines accessible in 13 different languages to loan or renew items. The building will also have more comfortable study areas and seating for those working or catching up on their reading.
In order to move their stock to the new building, the temporary library is closing down, but they still have drop boxes made available for returning items.
In addition to that, they can also issue items and order stock from the temporary library, to be picked up from respective branches. Members will also be able to renew and reserve items online or by ringing 02920 382116.
In keeping with Cardiff’s aim to be a green city the new library has a sedum grass roof, insulating the building as well as helping to remove CO2 from the air.
In order to stop the seeds being eaten by Cardiff’s pigeon and seagull population, two birds of prey, a Harris Hawk called Folly and a Saker Falcon called Madam are temporarily being used to keep other hungry birds off the roof.
One of the managers at Cardiff Central Library said: "Staff are excited by the prospect of moving into this exciting new building at the hub of the City Centre new development and we're sure that our library members share that excitement."
