Punk Guitarists (And Vocalist) Wanted!
Cardiff-based punk rock band John Q Public — who some of you may remember as May Contain Nuts, who headlined our launch party back in 2008 — are looking for a new vocalist and guitarist.
Shortly after changing their name last year, lead guitarist Adam 'Adumb' Williams left the band to pursue new musical projects. And now, thanks to some horrible thing called "work", vocalist 'Rev' Sam Holland is also parting ways with the band. But founding members Nurse and 'Doc' Ryan refuse to let this band die, and are scouting Cardiff for people with the skill, calibre and wacky sense of humour needed to replace their former bandmates.
As someone who has been a fan of JQP/MCN for years and watched them grow and mature as a band, I think it's a great shame and I will miss their talents a lot. If you've ever seen the band in concert you'll know that the energy all four bring to the stage is hard to match: the ability to have fun is paramount, and you'll need to be able to handle both circle pits and stagediving Santas if you plan to audition.
JQP have been on the scene for a number of years now and have gathered one hell of a cult following. Their shows are regularly crowded and they've headlined at Barfly and Welsh Club more times than you've had cooked dinners, and have supported bands including Electric Six and The Misfits. Each year they host a Christmas Bonanza, which has everything from a Santa's Grotto to punk rock covers of Christmas carols and is never to be missed.
While their songs have taken on a more serious attitude since ditching the name May Contain Nuts, I still maintain that some of their best songs are the ones which clearly came about from a bunch of guys having a laugh and not taking life seriously in the slightest. Yes, songs like The Bogeyman and Polute are still great, but it's the songs which I'd get fired for quoting from that really make this band awesome.
If you're committed, have a love of punk rock without taking yourself too seriously, and can either sing or play lead guitar (or even both) then get in touch with John Q Public as soon as possible, as auditions are being held this Sunday. To get involved, drop the band an email or leave a message on their Facebook page.
