Rowing Challenge
Cardiff Sporttrain learners have been getting to grips with the importance of charities and in particular the work of Children In Need.
They have studied the different sectors of society which receive help from the charity, and have discovered through a role play exercise the difficulties faced by the Children In Need Decision Board when deciding who to fund.
As one learner stated, “Last Friday we had a lesson about Children In Need. I didn’t realise how difficult it was for the board to decide who to give money to, and how much, until I had to share out £100,000 between five charities. It was really hard because I thought they all deserved the money.”
This lesson gave the learners insight into Children In Need, a charity which they are currently fundraising for. On Monday 17 November, all Sporttrain students will be meeting at Channel View Leisure Centre in Grangetown to take part in a sponsored rowing competition, with all money raised going to Children In Need which airs on BBC1 this Friday.
“We are going to be split into two teams and each team will need to row 42,000 metres which is 26.3 miles,” says another young learner. “I hope my team will win and that Channel View will be better than all the others!”
“I think that the challenge is going to be very hard but it will also be fun and worthwhile because the money we raise will go to Children In Need. Each centre is hoping to raise £400 through sponsorship and Guess The Score games.”
The event will also celebrate the learners’ achievements at Sporttrain, as certificates will be presented to many of them.
