Slumdog Millionaire

Having premiered at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival in Canada and been nominated for numerous awards, Slumdog Millionaire (15, 116mins) has a bit of a hype surrounding it.

Based on an original book by Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup, Slumdog is about a Mumbai slum child who grows up to be on the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? but is held by the police on suspicion of cheating.

Each question he is asked has a significance to him, and between the beatings he receives from the brutal Mumbai police we learn about lead man Jamil Malik's (played by young British Asian Dev Patel - Anwar in Skins) childhood as a muslim slum child on the streets of Mumbai.

As fluid as paint from an artist's brush, Slumdog incorporates romance, drama, some comical scenes, violence and has huge cultural insight into Bombay, from both a religious and a social perspective.

Director Danny Boyle portrays India as Mira Nair did when making Salaam Bombay, without the false hope and romancticisms of Bollywood that is still, sadly cliched with every Asian subcontinent film that's been shot in the last few years.

Heavily realistic, this film is a testament to director Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Trainspotting and Shallow Grave) and its cast of fresh faces on the British Asian scene will be actors and actresses that you will be seeing a lot more of.

Since its release a few weeks ago, it's been nominated for 47 awards and won 42 of them.

This film captured my full attention for the two hours it was on and breaks down a lot of myths and stereotypes, and breaks taboos with its highly controversial content matter that remains behind closed doors in both Indian and British society.

Highly reccomended; you won't find a better film on at the cinema at the moment.
