In response to recent press coverage and proposals that homeless people be removed from the streets of Cardiff for the Olympics, local people of all ages and walks of life, organisations and business representatives are gathering to show their support and solidarity for the homeless people in the city.

With cuts in housing benefit, homelessness services and the lack of affordable housing more and more people are finding themselves in vulnerable situations. Homelessness rose last year by 14% and is set to rise even more.

Llamau, Wales’ leading youth and women’s homelessness charity is supporting the gathering planned for this evening Wednesday 1st of August at 6pm on the lawns of City Hall.  They are hoping it will raise vital awareness of the plight of those most deprived members of our society and those who find themselves without a home.

It is a lesser known fact that as well as the more visible homeless people sleeping on our streets, there is also an entire generation of ‘hidden homeless’ that aren't represented in any statistics. These are people with no fixed abode, who are sofa surfing, staying with friends or in hostels, without a home to call their own. It is from this group that many of Llamau’s service users derive.

Llamau is one of many organisations that works in the city and across Wales where young people face homelessness. As part of their ongoing campaign to raise awareness of homelessness as well as funds to support their work, Llamau is holding an organised Sleep-Out in November.  More information can be found on their website here.
