The Taqwatour Is Coming To Cardiff!
After much anticipation, we are pleased to announce that Taqwacore is going to happen in Cardiff! For those of you not familar with Taqwacore, it's a literary-inspired Muslim punk rock movement, but it's so much more than that. It's going to happen on June 22nd. The thing is though, we need some help. We need to find venues that can show both a film and host a gig, along with people to help with flyers and general promotion.
We have two bands confirmed: Al-Thawra and The Kominas, along with some local bands who have offered their support. We hope to show both the documentary where Omar Majeed, a Canadian fillm maker, went with the Taqwacore bands went they toured in the US. Driven by The Taqwacores author Michael Muhammad Knight himself in a (for lack of a better term) pimped up school bus, they played shows all across the US and followed up a few months later when the Kominas played in Pakistan. I can't comment on it too much, I haven't seen the actual documentary myself; when we show it it'll be the first time I've seen it.
If anybody knows of venues who can do this (I've already contacted Cardiff Arts Institute and Chapter) on the 22nd of June, that date and that date only (it's a long story) please contact dan@thesprout.co.uk (who will forward messages on to me) as soon as possible. We have a group on Facebook that people have joined to keep up to date with what's going on with both the gig and the screening which you can reach here. There are three officers whom you can message with ideas about how we can take this Taqwacore in Cardiff off the ground.
