  • What is it with Volunteer groups and bongos?

A couple of weeks back, if you were floating around the city centre you’d have heard some almighty rhythms coming from Working Street (that bit by the side of Superdrug and JJB off Queen Street).

The beats were bongo-based and were juddering around for Do It For Cardiff 2010. A joint effort between Voluntary Community Service (VCS) and Voluntary Action Cardiff (VAC), Do It For Cardiff 2010 was a day of events to encourage people to volunteer for charities and organisations across Cardiff.

But don’t worry if you missed the event, as VCS run a free drop in centre on St. Mary’s Street (I think it’s by Chicken Cottage). Open 10am-4pm daily, VCS offer free, impartial advice on great places to volunteer and help you get some all-important work experience.

And it is important. Work experience looks great on a CV and can open up all kinds of further opportunities and give you a taste if a certain career is for you. You’ll also be helping your fellow Cardiffians which I believe results in a certain warm feeling inside.

Don’t believe me? Then have a read of some of these vox-pops…

“I volunteer because....”

“It gives me a sense of achievement, and a part of something special.”

“To give something back to the community, get involved in something practical and physical. Feels good to give your time.”

“Gaining new skills and CV points!” - Tracy, Cardiff YOT

“Because we want to!” - Billy Piper

“I love helping other people in need, they learn from me and I learn from them! Very enjoyable.”

“I am a volunteer champion for BAWSO! It's great to help the community and you can get a lot out of it.”

“I want to make a difference in my community!”

“Passing on skills and experience.”

“It gives something back to the community and allows me to feel apart of it.”

Most organisations will pay travel expenses too, so you won’t be out of pocket. Why not give it a bash?

If you want to do a bit of research before visiting VCS have a butcher’s at the volunteering section of Sprout Direct.
