I don’t know what I’m going to be. What life I’m going to live. What career I’m going to have. It should be easy, shouldn’t it? I have the skills, the talent. I’ll get the grades.

So there are expectations. Standards. I’m bound to achieve them, aren’t I? I’m going to do well. I have to get a good job.

But what will I be? A politician, maybe? Yes, that’s a good career. One which you can excel at. Something which will make you proud. Make your mum proud. Your dad. You can boast about it. Tell everyone what a respectable career you have. Maybe, but I don’t like politics.

Or a scientist, a doctor. It does sound rather tempting. I can’t imagine the thrill you get telling everyone what a fantastic, challenging job you have. Maybe I will then. I really wouldn’t want to waste my talent. Maybe, but I don’t like science.

You need something that’s going to make all your years at school worthwhile. You don’t want to waste your skill, do you? You want to be able to tell your class mates, your friends, your acquaintances what you do. Make them jealous. Make them wish that they could be as good as you. Make them only dream to have the flair and the aptitude they have. You need to show them that you really are better than them.

Well then, naturally you should be taking philosophy, chemistry and maths. No, further Maths. Yes, really show them how inferior they are to you. Do you regret not taking triple-fast track science now? Why didn’t you then? Couldn’t keep up? Not quite good enough? Maybe you need just that little bit more time to have things explained to you, I understand. Such a pity, but, then again, not everyone is capable of keeping up with the fast pace. That is why they call it triple-fast.

It’s not too late to claw back your talent, stop it going to waste. You could still become an engineer. I’ve never met an engineer who wasn’t absolutely fascinating, so clever, so bright. You could be that you know. You could be all those things. You could be a real high flyer, you could be a great success in a career that baffles the minds of others. People would be in awe of your talent.

Maybe, but I don’t like mechanics or architecture, chemistry or biology, politics or law. I just don’t. You can keep your triple-fast track, your philosophy and further maths. If I’m enjoying what I’m doing then that’s the only thing that matters. Because, to me, doing something, doing anything, with the single intention of impressing others really is a waste of time, a completely fruitless activity. And to base your career on it is frankly a terrifying and dangerous prospect.

And I still don’t know what I’m going to be. What life I’m going to live. What career I’m going to have, but it doesn’t matter as long as I enjoy what I’m doing.
