We Love Turbulence!
WORDS: Yasmin Begum (Sprout Editorial Group) PICS: Killian Sexton
We Love Turbulence are a Mid-Ulster based band comprised of multi-instrumentalist Adam Horner and Peter Mallon on drums.
There are also?plans for friend Jonny Munro to fill in on bass.
Yes, that's right, just two members, but let me assure you this alternative duo are drastically different to the regular two-piece stereotype that we're aware of.
There's nothing standard about this band, formerly known as These Hills Have Eyes -?taken from the horror movie -?but for personal reasons renamed.
Their demo song, FYJK starts with a pedal, giving off an oxymoron of being both eerie and comforting at the same time. Influences from bands such as Sonic Youth (but more melodic, trust me), Explosions In The Sky, Caspian and cult-band Therapy? are clear here.
FYJK takes the guitar and drums, and builds from that. The tension and atmosphere is incredible, taking the listener through an emotive journey. Solely beautiful with lush shoegazer-esque harmonies?and?stunning drums, but quietening back down to military-like drums and the guitar.
Angry as the drums build faster, a wall of sound is created, a dynamic wall of sound. The sounds that these two men make from their instruments is sheer brillance, as is apparent on the second track If You Lick The Lollipop...
This track has got a Sigur Ros quality to it, although with only two tracks on their MySpace page, this band are one of the most promising going. IYLTL... takes a melancholic and dark sound, with a Pixies-esque quiet-LOUD-quiet philosophy to it; the calm before the storm.
Their EP is to be named If You Lick The Lollypop Of Medicority YOU SUCK!, with a total of three songs on the record.
The fact that both members are still in university is incredible. If you like experimental rock, or even if you don't, I'd give these guys a listen. You won't regret it.
