Fairbridge De Cymru

Target Group: N/A

For our young people, realising your potential starts with realising you have it. To achieve that requires two things: someone to tell you that you have ability and an opportunity to prove it to yourself and to others. We aim to give young people the motivation, confidence and skills they need to change their own lives. We succeed in motivating young people who have switched off to formal learning. We give them the opportunity to do the sort of activities they enjoy. Our skill is in facilitating these activities to enable young people to develop a belief in their own potential. Every programme is tailored to meet individual needs and lasts for as long as a young person needs support, be that three weeks or three years.

We work with parents who may have left school with few or no qualifications and seek to help guide them onto the learning ladder for themselves and their families. By targeting parents with young children we aim to help them understand the value of play in the first instance. We look at various activities they can engage in with their children and the learning outcomes associated with them. We also run workshops where Sure Start crèche workers have the opportunities to look at various learning themes and activities. They can then incorporate them into their planning when working with young parents.

Flat Holm Project

Flat Holm Project

Target Group: N/A

Rich in wildlife, steeped in history. Just 5 miles from Cardiff and Barry, the tiny island of Flat Holm is a different world with a wealth of history and wildlife. You will be amazed at how much there is to discover.

Since Dark Age times, Flat Holm has been a retreat for monks and since then has acted as sanctuary for Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, silver miners, smugglers and cholera victims. Fortified in Victorian times and again in World War II it is perhaps most famous for receiving the first ever radio message across water sent by Marconi in 1897.

Flat Holm is now a site of special scientific interest and a local nature reserve.

The island is a haven for wildlife, home to one of the largest colony of gulls in Wales. There are many other animals to see including shelduck, slow worms and George, our wild tortoise. Spring and summer bring a profusion of rare and interesting wild flowers.

So follow in the footsteps of the first recorded welsh saint and visit the most southerly point in Wales. Walk over Viking bones and explore the Victorian gun pits before coming face to face with a gull chick or slow worm.

Shelter Cymru's Education Project

Shelter Cymru's Education Project

Target Group: N/A

We aim to raise awareness of homelessness and housing options amongst young people. We have two education packs for use in schools and youth organisations, Housemate Primary (9-11years old) and Housemate Secondary (11-18 years old). These explain what is meant by homelessness and how young people can leave home successfully. The housemate website gives handy tips on finding suitable accommodation after leaving home. The Key to the Door game can be used to heighten young people's awareness of issues surrounding housing and homelessness. The Peer Learning Project uses the experiences of young people who have faced housing problems or homelessness to educate their peers on these issues.

Students have many different reasons for choosing to study here. For some, the quality of the course is important; for others it is the social life and facilities offered by the city. A proportion of students tell us they chose Cardiff because the city does not leave them feeling overwhelmed; others wish to be close to their home. Whatever their reason for choosing Cardiff, all our students say that when they leave us at the end of their course they take with them memories of friendship, warmth and hospitality.
