Maze Advocacy
Target Group: N/A
We are the Maze Advocacy Project and we provide an advocacy service to young people age 6-19 in Somerset and Cardiff who are in emotional or mental distress.
Our project started life as an idea between two organisations (Advocacy in Somerset and Tros Gynnal) who realised that young people in emotional and mental distress often don’t have many choices and options about where to get help and support, especially around knowing their rights and getting their views heard by the adults involved in their lives.
These two organisations worked together to get funding from the Big Lottery fund to set up Maze Advocacy and run it for three years in Somerset and Cardiff. While doing this they are going to write a guide for other people who want to set up similar projects for young people in their own local areas.
The project officially started life in April 2006 and launched its service to young people in November of that year. It is becoming increasingly known about and used by children, young people and adults in both areas.

Primary Mental Health Team
Target Group: N/A
The team at present consists of one full time and one part time mental health specialist, both experienced Child and Adolescent Mental Health therapists.
The team is a resource for professionals who work with young people. They can work through offering consultation, training or joint working, where they join the professional concerned to see the young person and family so that suggestions and advice can be offered. The aim is to help children’s professionals increase their confidence in promoting emotional health, identifying mental health problems at an earlier stage and in choosing effective responses ( whether through their own work or referring to the right agency)
Part of the work is also to develop services, for instance the new Book Prescription Scheme for children and families, where self help books can be borrowed from Cardiff libraries for extended periods of time. Any enquiries about this scheme should be directed to the PMHT.
At present the team sits with the Cardiff specialist CAMHS teams i.e. the Consultant led clinic teams, so some degree of liaison work between specialist CAMHS and other agencies can be undertaken.
The best time to contact the team is Wednesday mornings when telephone consultation can be offered on most weeks.

SWITCH Cymru
Target Group: N/A
Learning
Switch can help you with learning all sorts of new things; whether for fun, to keep up with the children, do more to help your community or to help your job prospects. What is different about SWITCH is that you can do so at a local community centre run by local volunteers who will give you support and help. There are all sorts of courses and materials that you can look at available over the internet and we'll also be running short courses at your local centre. If you're not used to computers we will help you. We can help with reading, writing, number skills and learning to use computers plus a whole lot more.
Employment and Training
In time Switch intends to help people improve their job prospects whether or not you are currently in work. The learning option can help you to gain new skills and some of the internet links available will give advice on what skills you need for a particular job. There is also information on job vacancies "on-line". In time we want to develop a much better service at local centres giving advice on training and job opportunities. Help us to develop this.
Advice and guidance
Some of the centres involved in Switch already offer an excellent range of advice services to their communities. In time we want to extend this to all of the centres, so they will all be able to offer advice on benefits, legal issues, housing, immigration, dealing with bodies like the Council, Health service, gas, electricity etc.
Volunteering and more active communities
One of our intentions is to help communities help themselves. We want people to become more active, to volunteer to help out with making them better places to live. We will need volunteers with all sorts of skills but the most important things are to have a genuine interest and energy. We can provide the training and support to help you get new skills. Being a volunteer could even help with job prospects. Interested?
Health
For almost all the communities involved in Switch, health matters are a big issue. In the long term Switch would like to do things to improve people's health.

The Ffaith Project - Ash Wales
Target Group: N/A
Ffaith is a Youth Advocacy Project that is helping young people across Wales resist the temptations of smoking and tobacco use. Ffaith is Welsh for Fact, and we give you the facts about smoking that you may not already know. We actively encourage young people (smokers or non smokers) to join the project and help us stop other young people starting to smoke, we don’t preach and young people are actually helping us drive the project forward. Did you know that tobacco companies need you as ‘replacement smokers’ for their customer who have already died from smoking? You are targeted through a variety of methods to make sure that you take those first few puffs and then become addicted.
Tobacco is the only product sold that if used as directed will kill you. Ffaith will leave you with an American tobacco company’s thoughts on their customers:
“We don’t smoke the sh*t, we just sell it. We reserve the right to smoke for the young, the poor, the black and the stupid."
For more information about Ffaith and to enquire about joining the project please contact Daniel Clayton

Voluntary Community Service
Target Group: N/A
Voluntary Community Service came into being in 1964 and is the volunteer bureau serving the city of Cardiff.
The aims of VCS are to promote volunteering and support volunteers so that voluntary work proves a happy and rewarding experience for those engaged in it. VCS encourages volunteering by all sections of the community and supports a policy that everybody has something to offer and is able to become a valued volunteer.
The office is situated in the centre of Cardiff. There are over 350 voluntary organisations registered with the bureau offering volunteers experience in areas such as youth work, mental health, disability, older people, advice lines, environmental projects, administration and community work.
People who would like to become volunteers but are unable to visit the office due to disability or work commitments are offered the services of an Outreach Worker who will visit them at a time and place which is convenient to them.
All members of staff have personal experience of volunteering and are happy to talk to individuals who may be unsure where their particular interests lie.

Youth2Youth
Target Group: N/A
Youth2Youth (Y2Y) is a unique helpline service. The reason it is unique is that the helpline is run by young people for young people.
Many young people find it difficult to talk to adults; some do not trust them and often young people feel older people just do not understand. Considering the difficulties some young people face when talking to adults there are very few opportunities to contact alternative services. Here at Y2Y we provide that alternative. Our helpline staff are all young people themselves who have been specially trained to help.
The helpline is for any young person under the age of 19 years who feel they need emotional support. Young people who are worried, confused or just need to talk can contact our trained volunteers by telephone, email or on-line chat. Whichever way they choose to contact Y2Y they can be assured that their call will be treated confidentially and a young person will be there to give them the support and help they need.
