Cardiff Bond Board has been set up to enable people on low incomes or benefits to gain access to accommodation in the private rented sector. It will do this by providing landlords with a bond guarantee on the tenant’s behalf.

The bond is given in the form of a Security Bond Certificate. This is a written guarantee by Cardiff Bond Board to the landlord that if at the end of the tenancy there are rent arrears or damage, Cardiff Bond Board will reimburse the landlord up to the value of the agreed bond.

We provide a resource centre where service users can access the internet for job search and on-line training courses and where they can meet with other service users, with advice workers on hand to assist with any queries. In house courses provided include personal development (OCN) and English/Maths and Basic Skills (OCN) as well as one off courses such as confidence building, stop smoking and acupuncture. The weekly activities at DFL are chess, football, gym, swimming, pool, snooker, Tai Chi, and a music workshop. Life Skills classes include cooking and budgeting (OCN). Advisors from external agencies also visit DFL on a regular basis. These include CSV, The Enterprise Centre and Learn Direct.

We have two education packs for use in schools and youth organisations, Housemate Primary (9-11years old) and Housemate Secondary (11-18 years old). These explain what is meant by homelessness and how young people can leave home successfully. The housemate website gives handy tips on finding suitable accommodation after leaving home. The Key to the Door game can be used to heighten young people's awareness of issues surrounding housing and homelessness. The Peer Learning Project uses the experiences of young people who have faced housing problems or homelessness to educate their peers on these issues.

The Wallich night shelter works with homeless individuals who are in need of emergency accommodation; this operates on a nightly basis and assists with referrals to hostels who will then work with clients to find more secure accommodation.
Support is given to suit individual needs and will cover benefit queries, budgeting, health, accessing move-on and any issue that may be of concern to the client.
There is a woman only room which accommodates two females; clients are not encouraged to enter other rooms due to privacy.
Opening hours for the clients is from 8pm until 9.30 am a hot evening meal is provided and cereal and toast are accessible.
Rooms are shared as are the bathrooms and there is a communal lounge, and the use of a washing machine and tumble dryer.

The Young People Project

We provide good quality supported housing for young people. We provide support with debt, access to training, access to employment and benefits and also onward referral to community mental health teams and drug and alcohol abuse teams. Our aim is to move the young person on to their own stable accommodation with affordable support mechanisms. There is a waiting list but the length of stay can vary according to individual need. The project provides 5 flats, one of which is a satellite flat in Butetown. We are a clean project and do not allow any drug use. We do not provide a dispensing service for any medication to tenants.
