  • The law states that everyone between the ages of 5 and 16 must get a full-time education. It‘s compulsory

  • But the law also allows parents to educate their children at home instead of sending them to school, if they are able to show they are giving them a proper education. This is called home education or home tuition.

  • Some parents feel they can give their child a better education at home. School does not suit everyone.

  • Some of the main reasons parents educate their children at home are problems with bullying, religious reasons, a long term illness, special educational needs, a disability, or the child is prevented from attending school for some other reason such as exclusion or behavioural problems.

  • Parents should bear in mind, however, that at school children are taught by trained professionals, they may have difficulty providing suitable facilities at home for all subjects, especially for science subjects and sport and that it is important children learn how to interact with others.

  • If you are under 16 your parents have to tell the Local Education Authority that they are going to educate you at home - you can‘t just stop going!
