Film Making

  • Film making is the activity and process of making a film
  • Although professional film making takes years and requires huge amounts of money, many people make short films or home videos at a lower level and on a small budget
  • Young amateur film makers can often achieve a surprisingly professional result with the use of digital film processing and some editing software designed for home use
  • There are different aspects to film making that you could learn about or be involved in, such as editing, directing, producing or scrip-writing - these are all very different from each other but equally important aspects of making films
  • The stages of film-making are:-
    • development
    • preproduction
    • production
    • post-production
    • distribution
  • To learn about film making you could study books about it, attend a workshop, a film making course, study film making at college or university or contact your Community Learning Centre for more information
  • Or you could simply make a home-video using a video camera
  • You might decided to make a short film for fun, for the experience, to test out an idea or to try to make some money
  • If you want your short film to be screened, a television channel may show it, but the best way is probably a film festival or just to show it to friends and families to get a response. You could also get it on to the internet
  • There is a minimum level of quality required for a short film to be screened on television
  • Before you start the project, try to decided what your objectives are, because this will determine how much equipment you need, whether or not you need a crew, and the quality of film you are aiming for
  • You may even be able to find funding for your project as there are people who want to invest in new ideas as they may be successful
The University of Wales College, Newport offers full-time courses in all aspects of film making, including its well-known Animation course

Animation

  • Animation is when a moving picture is produced. This could be through:-
    • plain animation eg a sequence of drawings
    • computer animation or
    • puppet animation eg clay models
  • The most popular type of animation is computer animation
  • There are hundreds of animated children's programmes and movies - ' Wallace and Gromit' is a clay animation show, ' Sleeping Beauty' is plain animation and 'Toy Story' is computer animation
  • You can learn about animation by studying a course, taking part in a workshop or by looking at books or the internet
  • The Animation degree at Newport University in South Wales has a very high reputation around the world
  • The course concentrates on developing the students' understanding of animation as a film art as well as simply learning the techniques of animation. The course is taught through a series of workshops, seminars and personally supervised research projects
