This is the prologue of a new novel being written by Samantha Wainwright (Sambow) and Elin Burgess (emb789).
"Come on Beth! If you don't practice you won't be any good!".
I sighed. My twin, Alyn, always got like this about Magyk! He wants to practice ALL THE TIME and I just want to enjoy life’s pleasures.
"Alyn, I have spent ALL DAY working behind a counter being blamed for everything that is wrong with our realm! I. AM. NOT. IN. THE. MOOD!"
"Oh, come on Beth! How are you going to prove that Magyk can be used for good if you never practice?" Ugh. I didn’t see why I, personally, should prove the rulers of Qualm Springs wrong! Every day he nagged me, like yesterday and the day before that and the… well you get the point. I left the room. "Where are you going? We just started!" he shouted after me. "I need air!" I spat back.
He probably knew I was lying, he probably knew I was going to go call my uncle, best friend, confidant and idol, Bryn. Like I did every day.
I dialled the one number I knew off by heart and waited for Bryn to answer. No "Uncle" for him, he's just Bryn to everyone. He answered on the first ring. "Beth? You OK?" He must have Caller ID on.
"It's just Alyn. Again. He just wants me to practice, practice, PRACTICE! It's so ANNOYING! It seems the only time he wants to practice is when I've had a really bad day at work and I’ve been blamed for the state of Northern Territory over in Qualms and I got yelled at for putting the magazines in a non-alphabetical order…" I got cut off by Bryn, I realized my voice had cracked and I'd started crying.
"Woah, B, sounds like you're being over-worked by everyone, especially Alyn! Now, I would just be supportive if this was the first time, but this happens every day. I've been thinking, and maybe Quataria isn't right for you anymore. I've been planning on leaving for good to search for your Uncle Al, but I couldn't bear to tell you. Maybe you should come with me? I know it'll be hard for you to get up and leave your family, your friends, and your life, but I really think..." I had stopped listening. A way out? A new start? A chance to run away from it all?
My family have been witches and wizards for many generations, for so long that we don't even have to train to learn this knowledge anymore; we're born with it. Our family also have a special... gift. We can edit the memories of anyone, take out what we want them to forget and fill it in with anything we choose. Rosemerta is our family name. It means “Blessèd Controllers”. One other thing you should know, my mother and two uncles are “Peace of Body” (Bryn), “Peace of Mind” (My mother, Minerva) and “Peace of Spirit” (Uncle Alyn) personified. But Uncle Alyn has been missing for 20 years since the year before Alyn and I were born so most of our family has presumed that he's dead. Except Bryn. But of course Bryn has always been like that, optimistic that is, a dreamer and a damn good one at that.
I realized my pause had gone on too long as my train of thought had wandered on its own, did he think I didn't want to go now? Without thinking I said the words quickly, sort of like a splutter of one big word "Yes, yes! Bryn I want to go."

We were crazy when we were writing this, I think chapter one could be better though :P
