Cardiff City 2 - 1 Swansea City

With both teams searching to confirm their places within the playoff positions, the South Wales derby was to be one of the most hotly contested in decades – and this proved correct. The crowd surpassed themselves again, building an atmosphere that could rival a roman amphitheatre and it was contested like the gladiators fought their matches.

The two teams sparred well, with Swansea stealing large amounts possession, but Cardiff more threatening with the ball they had. However Swansea took the lead on the 28th minute from an Andrea Orlandi corner. A corner which shouldn’t have been a corner I may add, the replays clearly show that the whole of the ball did not cross the line. The Swansea player whips the ball in and Ashley Williams bundles David Marshall into the net allowing the ball to sail into the goals.

This temporarily silenced the Cardiff crowd and sent the Swansea supporters into euphoria, but Michael Chopra restored the balance on the stroke of half time as he latched onto a flick on from Jay Bothroyd who lay immobile for a good five minutes after. The crowd went into hysterics when the ball found the net, everyone was on their feet, hugging the random stranger who sat next to them in jubilation.

Unfortunately I had to leave the game with five minutes remaining so that I can get to work on time, so therefore I will be describing the goal as I have seen on TV. With 2 minutes of injury time gone Adam Matthews launched a long throw into the Swansea penalty area. It was cleared to the edge of the box and Chopra sensing Gavin Rae might win the header started his run in behind the defence, Rae did win the ball in the air, heading it into the path of Chopra who smashed the ball into the net sending crowd into a hysterical euphoria that was greater than when we confirmed our place in the F.A. Cup final in 2008. The win sets Cardiff eight points clear of the chasing pack and leaves Swansea treading water with only a two point gap between them and Blackpool who lie in seventh place.

Swansea's goal should never have stood.

I know, Phill Dowd is a shocking ref.

Got something to say?
