Body Modification: Thoughts & Feelings
Piercings and tattoos are all around us. Wherever you look someone has a cool piercing or an awesome piece of artwork on their skin.
I’ve always been fascinated with tattoos and love to watch Miami Ink and LA Ink. I’ve never been overly bothered if I fit in or not and to be honest, sometimes I rather be different. I’m too young to be adding ink to my skin so my piercings are a way of being individual and being me I guess.
Since November I have had four piercings and I am aiming to add to this number over the coming months, let’s just say I’m a bit of an addict when it comes to them and as soon as I’ve had one done I’m planning the next!
This has been a topic among my friends and some of them love them, others really can’t stand them, so I was wondering what everyone on theSprout thinks?
During the discussion with my friends it has got me thinking a lot about whether society has still truly accepted more adventurous body modifications or not? After all, almost everyone has their lobes pierced - some as young as three or four - but as soon as it moves from the lobes to another part of the body such as the belly button then people get all queasy, does anyone know why this might be?
In writing this article I hope to get some opinions from people about piercings as well as tattoos. I want to be able to understand how people view others that do have body mods.
I think some people don’t even know what things are out there. Until I got my industrial (vertical bar across top of ear) I’d never seen anyone else with one but once I had it done, it opened my eyes to the fact that other people had them and I’d just never looked out for it. This may sound strange but I felt like I had a connection with them, we had had the same piercing and in that one little painful thing we were going through similar experiences and that makes things seem quite cool actually.
Does anyone else feel similar or are you a person who doesn’t notice things?
Another issue I am now starting to face is relationships, my current boyfriend doesn’t really like piercing or tattoos but is being tolerant at the moment, has anyone had experiences where their piercings/tattoos have come before a partner? I don’t want to lose him but I’ll never ditch my piercings.
Also have you ever been treated differently because you have piercings?

I like tattoos and piercings but I always think of what they'll look like when they're 70, especially those big hole plug things that stretch the ears, but I suppose that's part of the appeal - screw the future etc.

Who cares what you're going to look like when your about 80, who knows how long you're going to live for?
