Welcome to window #24 of the CLICmas Advent Calendar

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house,
All hell had broke loose, all over a mouse.
The stockings, no longer, were hung up with care,
Instead they were flying right through the air.

My daughter was screaming, my son smiled with delight,
While my wife was stood on a chair out of fright.
This silly old rodent was causing such hassle,
The commotion had brought down the tinsel and tassel.

Another scream came as the mouse ran a’ scurrying
Into the kitchen and after it I hurried in.
I leapt for the creature as it ran to its hole
And knocked off the turkey, the full dinner whole.

My head by the hole, my ears they were heightened
When all of a sudden, my gosh, was I frightened!
The lights in the house had shut off in a flash,
I went to the back yard in a mighty old dash.

Although it was cold, the ground it was bare,
The rain carried through on the bitter blown air.
To the side of my house, I went and I pondered
How I could get to the electric box yonder.

I went to the shed where I keep all my tools
I noticed I’d left it unlocked! What a fool!
Flicking the light switch as I wandered in,
I noticed a smell that had been lingering.

In a dark corner of this spider-webbed shed
Behind a box of nails I spotted a head.
My heart began racing, my pulse gained velocity
As I crept in to please my own curiosity.

A sleeping man laid with his eyes firmly shut.
I couldn’t help wonder why he was in this hut.
I walked right up to him and gave him a prod
And asked him how he came ‘pon this happenstance odd.

“I’m homeless,” he told me, “and this Christmas Eve,
I’ve nowhere to go. I meant not to deceive.
The air is so cold with the temperature dropping
And the rain that we have shows no sign of stopping.”

The gentleman’s sorrow, it swam through my heart
And I felt as a human I should do my part.
I grabbed his thin blanket, stitched up and sowed,
And escorted him into my humble abode.

But one hour later, with the electricity flowing,
The house had been cleared and the fire was glowing.
My wife and my children were cooking a banquet
While next to the flames dried the homeless man’s blanket.

We sat down together and sang Christmas carols,
We played charades and drank Coke by the barrels.
We made links from paper and redressed the tree;
This homeless man, me and my family.

The Eve came to finish and the kids went to bed,
Where visions of sugarplums danced in their heads.
We set up the spare room and let the gent rest
While me and my wife settled down in our nest.

The morn came and I and my wife and my blood,
Sat down round the table with the turkey and spuds.
The mouse joined us and the man headed the table.
“Merry Christmas to all” he said, and so ends this fable.
