Deputy Minister for Skills Celebrates the Achievements of Fairbridge Young People

On Thurs 21 Aug, Deputy Minister for Skills Jonathan Griffiths AM celebrated the achievements of young people who were disengaged from education, employment or training. These young people did not have the opportunity to receive GCSE results on the 21st like other young people in Wales, as a result of falling out of the education system. They have, however, achieved qualifications and skills anyway thanks to the support of Fairbridge Cymru.

Almost one in ten young people in Wales will disengage from formal education at some point in their lives. If they remain disengaged, they will find it harder to gain personal, social and employment related skills to enable them to progress into work or training. Fairbridge Cymru exists to help these young people turn their lives around and reach their potential.

The purpose of holding the ceremony on the day GCSE results were released was to highlight the number of young people who are disengaged from school, and who, without Fairbridge, would be sitting at home on this day, believing that they have no future. Fairbridge demonstrates that with the right support and guidance, these young people are still capable of developing skills and achieving qualifications.

Mark Wilmore of Careers Wales read out the following quotes from staff who have worked in Partnership with Fairbridge:

“Fairbridge is great at empowering and motivation individuals.”

“Fairbridge is great as its flexibility allows individuals to achieve at different times and pace.”

“A Youth Gateway client attended the access course and completed the week. The client was previously lacking in confidence and motivation. They are now looking at training options they never thought possible to achieve and have become really motivated.”
