Gigs In June
What’s that sound? That’s the sound of things winding down slowly. Cometh the summer, cometh the festival?
Gigs over the summer in Cardiff dry up under the beating sun due to the mass exodus of the student community and the plethora of festivals nowadays.
But but but, bands need to warm up before a big festival show. Students demand an end-of-exam blowout. And so we cry hurrah for there are few tasty gigs happening in June.
--------------------------
Hatcham Social - 1st June @ Barfly - 7.30pm - £5/£4 with flyer - 16+
Taking inspiration form early 80s post-punk, classic 60s rock and childrens literature, Hatcham Social make indie-pop with a twist that's garnering plenty of attention.
Support comes from The Muscle Club and The Blizzards.
--------------------------
Killa Kela ? 4th June @ The Globe ? 7.30pm - £? ? 18+
Rowntree's Fruit Pastilles hawking UK beatbox extraordinaire Killa Kela comes to Cardiff for some lovely hippity-hoppity business. Good times for the head-nodders and the booty shakers amongst you.
--------------------------
The Bloody Beetroots/Zinc/Feadz/Das Glow - 5th June @ Clwb ? 10pm - £10adv ? 18+
Spider-mask wearing Italian electro wrecking balls The Bloody Beetroots headline C-Y-N-T's end of exam of exam blow out. Also on the bill is a de-jungle-ized DJ Zinc, Ed Banger stalwart Feadz and German knob-dwidler Das Glow.
Should be a boom banger banger.
--------------------------
King Creosote ? 5th June @ The Globe ? 7.30pm - £11 adv ? 18+
Scottish nu-folk legend brings dourness, melodic tunes, dourness, unusual harmonies and dourness to The Globe. Saying that there is a lovely warm quality to King Creosote’s music, so if you’re in possession of a beard or would like to acquire one, best stick to the Globe tonight rather than Clwb.
--------------------------
Mr Hudson ? 5th June @ Barfly ? 7.30pm - £8.50 adv ? 18+
? a 5 piece intent on cross-pollinating breaks, beats, pop and rock. Think Ice-cool vocals, steel-pan percussion, grooving bass and the uncanny enticement of mid-period Bowie. Imagine if Athlete had grown up in the Bronx wearing Trilbys and you kinda get the picture.
If that sounds like your bag then go for it. Oh and what happened to the Library part?
--------------------------
Golden Silvers - 10th June @ Clwb ? 7.30pm - £7/9 ? 18+
Something to do with Topman and The Rumble Strips, London synth twinklers Golden Silvers bring their Prince/Brit-pop/Glam indie tunage to Clwb Ifor Bach in support of their debut album "True Romance"(XL). Popular in Hoxton and with Jo Whiley, but don't let that put you off...
Support comes in the form of Everything Everything and My Tiger My Timing, with a DJ set from the aforementioned Rumble Strips.
--------------------------
Athlete ? 19th June @ Solus, Cardiff Students' Union - £15.50 adv ? 18+
I know! £15 for Athlete?Jeez Louise. Still if you’re an Ivor Novello Award winning act, with a number one album under your belt, I suppose you can charge what you want. Touring in support of their soon-to-be released fourth album Black Swan, expect lots tracks off that before they wheel out the hits such as Wires and Half Light.
If piddling indie bed-wetting music is your thing then you score.
--------------------------
Aqualung ? 24th June @ Glee Club ? 7.30pm - £12.50 ? 18+
After cutting his teeth with indie guitar acts such as Ruth and 45s, composer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Hales hit paydirt in 2002 when track Strange And Beautiful was chosen for a Volkswagen TV ad. Recent long-player Words And Music, featuring a choice (and chilled) cover of Paul Simon's Slip Sliding Away, is just as compelling.
Each to their own.
--------------------------
Wavves ? 27th June @ Clwb ? 8pm - £6/8 ? 18+
Californian no-fi blogosphere hype-stars (I got swept up too) Wavves are back for a second time this year after a hipster-clogged midweek show at Buffalo in March.
I’m glad I held back on posting this over the weekend because Wavves main man Nathan Williams had a colossal meltdown on stage at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona late Friday night. It was only the second date of the two-piece’s grand European tour, so it’s best to keep an eye on the Clwb website for any announcements.
Whatever has been said and done, So Bored is still one of the best tracks of year.
