WORDS: Michael Botzaropoulos

Grassroots, the long-established Cardiff city centre youth project, launched its comeback yesterday in the loudest possible way at Barfly, with the first night of a series of music events that will be taking place during the new season. The result was a long queue before the doors even opened, with almost 200 young people thirsty for noisy guitars filling up the legendary rock venue.

And they got more than enough from 1987, The Fix-up, The Bicycle Thieves and Llama Invasion, the four brilliant local bands that took over the stage with pride. Happy boys and girls, loads of jumping and the casual moshpit turned the night into a big party with three hours of great musical talent.

The event was one of the numerous activities that Grassroots will be showcasing this season. Coming soon is the release of the Stars Of Grassroots 07/08 compilation CD with some of the best artists that were recorded in Grassroots' studios. If you are in a band aged 16-25 and you are interested in playing in a live venue or recording your album, call 029 2023 1700 and ask for Mike from the Music Department. Live events will be organised on a monthly basis and all bands will be offered a free recording session.

Rock on!
