Hello Holla EP

WORDS: Sam Easterbrook (Sprout Editorial Group)

Kleerup is probably best known in this country for the track With Every Heartbeat?with fellow Swede Robyn, which went big in the summer of 2007.?

What that track had was not only solid dance production values but Robyn's siren call of heartbreak and loss.?

It was a good track but what made it great was Robyn, who provided an emotional bridge to connect with the moody track.?

The four tracks on the Hello Holla EP are all instrumentals; they lack the immediacy and the connection that vocals can bring.?

That is not to say instrumental music cannot achieve these heights but the tracks here are not strong enough to illicit such a response.?

The simple repetitive melodic lines on 3AM ? Munich Version brings to mind Kraftwerk, swathed in Ulrich Schnauss style feedback, while the motorik drums of Hello Holla ape much of Neu's work and similarly the glacial synths of Iris by Vangelis.?

But there are sparks here. Kleerup is clearly a talented producer; you don’t get three Grammys by being a chump.

The self-titled album which follows this EP will feature a host of vocal collaborations including Lykke Li and Robyn, so it might be worth holding out for that than partake in this vent of artistic juice.
