  • My what a fetching hat!

Chew Lips must be pooped.

Friday’s gig at Cardiff Arts Institute will be the third time they’ve played Cardiff this year and they ain’t a local band.

Hailing from The Big Smoke (I’m guessing Hoxton/Shoreditch), Chew Lips are a three piece electro-y synthpop band that whip out guitars occasionally and peddle a good line of credibly chorused and hook-laden dance-pop songs.

Their debut album Unicorn came out in January on the rather-fashionable-but-not-quite-as-much-as-it used-to-be French label Kitsuné and generally floated between 3 and four stars with the critics (77 out of 100 on metacritic).

Heavily influenced by the 80s, their nostalgic beeps and bleeps are further heightened personally by how I heard them initially. Championed by Steve Lamacq amongst others, Chew Lips are the last band I discovered through the radio rather than mp3 blogs or hype machine.

This third show, in Cardiff Arts Institute is the easiest to access so far, the others being a £6/7 affair in Bore-falo Bar and as support to Ellie Goulding on that X-Box Live tour that the hipster venues of Cardiff had a scrap over. Word is Chew Lips blew Goulding off the stage that night, so for £2 advance you can’t really argue.

Last time I checked there was 14 tickets left, but there’s always returns and a few held back at the door.
