Review: MLE - Beg Steal & Borrow
“Let me get straight to the point: I came here to party!”
This opening line pretty much epitomises the entire album by Welsh singer Emily Bates, known as MLE (you can see what she’s done there, can’t you?).
MLE takes an aggressive stance throughout her album and even when addressing intimate issues, her aggressive front protects the listener from any emotional attachment. Don’t expect any heart-wrenching ballads or tear-jerking vocals; there aren’t any.
If however, you are after a more pop-orientated album with songs that make you want to jump up and down, then you are in the right place. Her opening track, entitled Take Me to the Disco is an upbeat, pop song about self-acceptance of a party loving life. It is a song that you can really let loose to and is my personal favourite. You really can dance along to this.
At various times during the album, MLE relies solely on her vocals, choosing to have fragments where there is no background music. I thought it was an interesting technique and I think it is used very effectively, especially on the second track Do It for the Love, a song in which MLE explains her reasons for being a recording artist. It's a chirpy song.
There are some other great tracks on the album, which is called Beg Steal & Borrow. Be There is another great song, focusing on the dependency of people and is a real head bobber. Go Get It is what some people might call a motivational song. It addresses how some people want and want but don’t go to the effort of trying, whereas if you actually put some effort in, you’ll get what you want. It's another great track.
Overall, the album is a great piece of work and reminds me of Lily Allen but with more electric pop mixed in. Like Allen, MLE likes to use some colourful language so be advised when listening to it that if you’re offended, some moments may hurt your ears.
Overall it's a great album with some really great songs!
