Cardiff City 1 - 3 Brighton & Hove Albion

Cardiff City suffered their first defeat of the new season to Championship new boys Brighton, who started brightly in the first twenty minutes, almost as brightly as their away kit, resplendent as they were in black and neon green stripes.

City eventually played their way back into the game and a goal was starting to look imminent. Unfortunately it was Brighton’s as Ashley Barnes picked up on a loose, square  and shoddy pass by Kevin McNaughton who strolled a few yards and tucked it neatly inside David Marshall’s right-hand post from twenty-five yards. This deflated Cardiff, team and fans alike as the stands emptied for an early pie and City passed it around to no great effect waiting for the whistle.

The second half started with The Bluebirds rousing themselves before being dealt a quick counter-punch as The Seagulls charged up field and were awarded a penalty that Mark Hudson gifted them cheaply. It was duly despatched by Barnes for his second goal.

Cardiff tried to get back in the game by utilising the wide areas; especially via the over-lapping right-back McNaughton but Brighton were solid in defence and didn’t let too may crosses into their box. Once again, just as City seemed to be getting somewhere, Brighton broke and nabbed a third through Will Hoskins, the team displaying excellent counter-attacking skills that will serve them well away from home this season.

With the fans heading early for the gates rather than the pie shop this time, City pushed forward once again. They had more success however as Peter Whittingham pulled one back from the penalty spot and Don Cowie narrowly missed from six yards out.

If City had played the ninety minutes like they did the last ten then the result would have been different. As it was Brighton were deserving winners and already look like they’ll be hovering around the right end of the table come May.
