Young people in Cardiff spent a portion of their summer holidays building a bungalow entirely from scratch. The two-bedroom house was built in ten weeks by the young people as part of an innovative initiative by Capital Training (SW) Ltd. This even included the interior design of the property.

The project was for 14-16 year olds and its aim was to build the confidence of the workers and to teach them skills in communication and teamwork, as well as construction skills. When asked why they joined the scheme, the teenagers’ answers ranged from ‘to learn more things’ to the more focused ‘so I know how to build my own house in the future’.

Now that the project is complete the young people will be exhibiting their final product to their families and to Cardiff’s Mayor, Cllr Keith Hyde on this Saturday, with a special celebratory BBQ. There will also be a raffle and an auction in order to raise money for Ty Hafan.

Check out the video above to see the very ambitious plans for the bungalow. You can hardly believe that the volunteers managed to complete it in just 10 weeks, with no previous building experience!
