  • This Sprout Awards logo took about five minutes in MS Paint

Santa Claus has returned to Lapland. The smell of spent fireworks fills the air. Gyms are crammed with people swollen from seasonal excess. The novelty of wrapping up warm has now worn off.

It is grey, so so grey. Cold too. Grey and cold… and miserable.

We need something to look forward to, a little spark of light, a little bit of hope to see us through the bleak mid-winter.

And we at theSprout have got it.

No it’s not the first blooming daffodil or the start of the Six Nations. We are talking about theSprout Awards 2011. That’s right, the UK’s premier awards ceremony* is returning bigger and better for a second year.

There will be laughter, music, possible some nibbles, prizes, free stuff and of course prestigious awards to be won.

Keep checking back here for more details, such as categories, venue, dates, acts, a proper logo… OK a lot of things, but in the meantime, start writing, start spreading the word and start getting excited for – if last year’s rip-roaring success is anything to go by – one hell of a night.

Do you want to help organise the awards? If so then come and join SAOC (Sprout Awards Organising Committee) and have your say on stuff. Email me - sam@thesprout.co.uk or rock up to the next Sprout Editorial Group (SEG) meeting in Central Library (4th Floor) on Thursday 27th January.

*Not strictly true. That acclaim of course goes to the International Cheese Awards 2011, Nantwich in July.

Firstly, thank you to everyone who came to the meeting yesterday and for all the ideas that were thrown around, they've been duly jotted.

Secondly, I'll work through them over the weekend and will hopefully have something resembling the start of a plan by Monday.

Thirdly, even though things are still a bit sketchy, that doesn't mean you have to hold back on your prize-winning articles, so get writing!

The next Sprout Editorial Meeting is February 24th, but I foresee most of the Awards organising to be done over email.

If you would like to be included in this please drop me an email (sam@thesprout.co.uk).

By Monday, what I actually meant was Wednesday. Honest.

Got something to say?
