Uniform Issues

On Wednesday 29 April theSprout popped along to Llanedeyrn High School to pay a visit to the top set of year 8 (and Mrs Smith) to say hello and ask them to post us some articles.

Well, most of the posts were uniformly (arf!) about uniform changes. Here's what they had to say...

"We feel that we need a better looking uniform as our uniform is boring and doesn't make us look smart. We should be allowed to wear a shirt and tie. I feel that we don't look presentable and smart in a burgundy t-shirt and black trousers. The only problem is that we would have to wear a shirt everyday and people come in all different shapes and sizes and some people who are a bit overweight might not want to wear a shirt in case they get bullied about it.

Our PE uniform is very boring too, we have to wear a plan red top and dark bottoms and nobody likes it. When we go to a different school to play netball or hockey, we don't look smart and the other teams do." -- Danielle

"In Llanedeyrn High School we have a smart comfortable and practical uniform. We can also wear trainers if they are black. Unfortunately some people have decided to take the teachers generosity too far and have decided to wear fashionable tops under their school t-shirts.

They also wear lots of make up, wear huge jewellery and trainers with multi coloured stripes and laces. Because of this the teachers have had a long hard think about the uniform and have come to the decision that if the current uniform rules are not followed then we will have to go back to wearing a shirt, tie, blazer and skirt (for the girls).

I personally don't mind this change (apart from the skirt) but I wear my uniform correctly and I don't see why my mum has to fork out £100 to buy a uniform when the one I have now fits me and will last me until next year.

"Also, if we change the uniform then who says that the people who are compromising the present uniform won't do it to the new one." -- Graziella

"I think we should get to wear the uniform we have at the moment and still wear make-up. We shouldn't change back to the old uniform because you don't have as much choice. Now we can wear trainers and shoes as long as they are black but if we go back to the other uniform we all have to wear plain black shoes." -- Samiha

"I think my uniform is boring and I would love to have a change. The head teacher is thinking about changing our uniform to shirt and tie but if we do this the girls might have to wear skirts every day. This is a problem because people come in different sizes and don’t want to show their legs. I would love to have a new uniform but we should still be allowed to wear trousers." -- Sophie

"I think that us children should get a say on what we want as school uniform. At the moment the uniform is more boyish. I think  the school is taking our priviliges away from us, and I don't agree. First they stopped us from wearing make-up and now we're not allowed to wear long-sleeved tops under our school tops and they're trying to make us wear raincoats. I would rather wear a shirt and tie. -- Chloe

I agree with Sophie, because I don't like wearing shirts and a tie. I enjoy wearings jewellery and make-up. I don't know why they would stop that. It is not stopping them from teaching us. We wear make-up and jewellery to feel good about ourselves. Kellie
