Youth Forums: Represent Your Area
Democracy can be rubbish.
That's what some people think (Colonel Gaddafi especially). Other people can't get enough of getting up to their elbows in local democracy, marching here and there, petitions and fundraising a go-go.
Yet some people's experience is getting loads of terribly designed pamphlets shoved through their door every couple of years urging them to pop along to a primary school or a musty church hall to scratch a “x” in a box. Then they never hear from them again until they want you to scratch another “x”. And that’s only if you’re over 18. If you’re a teenager you get even less of a say in how things are run.
But things are changing in Cardiff.
Over the next couple of months a series of Youth Forums will be starting up across the city. The point of these forums is to meet up, chat about your area (the good things and the bad things) and to get a unified message across to the powers that be.
This is a perfect example of direct democracy, where you’ll be meeting the people in power to change your area for the better. They can’t ignore your voice now.
There will eventually be six forums across Cardiff but for now the first two are rolling out this June in the south of the city (Grangetown, Butetown and Riverside) on Friday 24th and in the east (Trowbridge, St Mellons, Llanrumney and Rumney) on Wednesday 22nd.
So if you live in these parts of Cardiff, are free on the corresponding day and want to represent your area call Paul Lewis from Cardiff Youth Service on 07976056131 or email paullewis@cardiff.gov.uk.
