Community Dental Services

The Community Dental Service (CDS) has 31 clinics located in Merthyr, R.C.T, Bridgend, Cardiff and the Vale, which provide dental treatment to children, patients with special needs, and other vulnerable groups. We have a Personal Dental Service (PDS) at 4 locations which provides dental care  for  children and adults where access to the General Dental Service (GDS) is  difficult . In Cardiff the CDS has a total of 13 facilities.

The CDS also provides the dental service for Cardiff Prison and also provides a dental service for the homeless.

The service from clinics is supported by a fleet of fully equipped Mobile Dental Clinics which provide a full range of treatment in the Community, which is primarily focused on schools  in areas of high dental need.  Dental care is also provided on a domiciliary basis for people who are housebound.

The CDS also provides dental screening in schools, as well as carrying out dental surveys annually to monitor oral health across the areas covered. This is part of a national programme.   

The CDS is taking a lead with North Wales on an innovative Oral Health programme called Designed to Smile. The first phase of this programme is to role out a toothbrushing programme to 200 high need schools which will involve the Nursery/ Reception and Year 1 children brushing once a day at school, and  given toothpaste and toothbrush packs to take home twice yearly. This, with a combination of Oral Health advice and training for parents, pupils and school staff will increase the knowledge in the fight against tooth decay.

Eventually, children in high need schools will have a combination of dental screening, a toothbrushing programme, fluoride varnish and fissure sealant preventive programmes to help reduce the decay levels in these high need areas of Cardiff. The CDS also provides support for health professionals in delivering dental advice to children under the age of 3 as part of the Designed to Smile programme.
