QUANTUM OF SOLACE ***
Dir. Marc Forster (12A, 110mins)
Daniel Craig returns in a direct sequel from his previous Bond outing, Casino Royale.
This latest edition to the franchise has a very different feel, with quick editing that throws viewers in all sorts of directions during the action sequences. With quite a loose storyline it is thanks to the strong set pieces that it holds together.
The film sets out to continue the storyline from Casino Royale and provides Bond with an opportunity for revenge. As always, there are plenty of slick one-liners, but it appears there are fewer gadgets this time around; his mobile phone is largely overused due to a new sponsorship campaign for the film, and his theme tune is totally absent.
Not quite as entertaining as Casino Royale, the film does prove that there is still plenty of life in the old boy yet, but whether there are enough stories that can be developed from Fleming’s core books is another matter.
One of the highlights of the film is the opening car chase, which climaxes in the depths of a quarry, as well as a chase across Italy. Ultimately, it is a welcome return from Craig and an enjoyable way of spending a few hours in the company of Her Majesty’s best secret agent.

As it's been about a year since I last watched Casino Royale, I spent half the film confused as I've forgotten who half the minor characters were.
I'd strongly advise re-watching Casino Royale the night before you watch Quantum of Solace, or you'll likely be scratching your head and asking "Who's he again?" to whoever's sitting next to you.
