How can I submit news?
In order to submit your news story you need to register with our website.
Submitting your news is really easy and straightforward. All it takes is a few moments.
Be sure to read through the terms and conditions before clicking submit.
Once submitted you will recieve a confirmation email letting you know we've recieved your creation. Our Youth Editorial Team will look at it, and if appropriate add it to the site.
What is news?
News can happen anywhere at any time, it is what is happening around us. It may involve current events, new initiatives or ongoing projects or issues. It could also be opinion and human interest stories.
What news story can I submit to theSprout?
News / stories you may want to write about are normally selected because of their importance, emotion, impact, timeliness and interest (all these factors do NOT have to coincide in each and every story). As theSprout covers local Cardiff news you may want to submit a story that could be relevant to you and young people living in Cardiff.
How do I write it?
Remember the five W's
Every news story must cover the five W's: who, what, when, where, why and sometimes how (it happened)? You don't have to cover all these in the lead, but still mention it in your story, because the purpose of the rest of the story will be to elaborate on the lead.
News value
What ever it is you choose to write about think about the impact of your story and why would other people be interested in it:
- A new smoking ban, for instance, has impact, because it would affect a lot of people
- The accident during big flooding has impact, too. Even if only one person was directly affected, many people will feel a strong emotional response to the story
Think about Objectivity/Fairness/Accuracy
Remember to use neutral language and avoid exclamation points. Check your facts/names of people involved in the story/correct quotes
Feature story
A news feature is usually selected by our editorial group from news items users submit. To get a good chance to have your feature selected remember this:
Features explore an issue. News features are less time-sensitive but no less newsworthy. They can be an effective way to write about complex issues. Features are full of interesting people, ideas, action and energy.
Submitting a video with your article
If you captured a video that is relevant or specifically recorded for your news item (interview/sporting event/music/performance) you can include a YouTube video with any news story.
Just upload your video in your YouTube account, copy the URL of the video appearing next to your uploaded video and paste it in the YouTube video section on the 'Submit News' page.
